Inc., Topsfield - Needs Assessment For A Regional Winery
Cooperative. Goal is to investigate the feasibility of forming
a cooperative which will encourage production and provide an
alternative outlet for locally produced crops. $2,265
2. Barnstable County Cooperative Extension, Barnstable
- Cultivation of Beach Plums for Commercial Fruit Production.
Project will develop IPM practices for beach plum production,
develop a marketing program for graded quality beach re-establish
the Cape Cod Beach Plum Growers plum products, and Association.

3. Berkshire Growers Cooperative, Pittsfield
- Studies will enable the cooperative to realize efficiencies
in the value added processing of crops, transportation systems
and labor management as well as prepare a strategic plan for
the cooperative. $20,000
4. Cape Cod Cranberry Growers Association and UMass/Carolyn
DeMoranville, East Wareham -Frost Protection Guide
For Massachusetts Cranberry Production. A fact sheet regarding
frost management for Massachusetts cranberry production will
be produced and distributed. $4,750
5. Franklin, Hampden, Hampshire Conservation Districts,
Northampton - Expanding the Commercialization of Thermal
Aquatic Technology For Weed, Fungi and Insect Control. Expanded
thermal aquatic research and testing is proposed including new
and innovative mechanical attachments and methods. Orchard research
will continue and several new types of agricultural crops will
receive treatment and study. $25,000
6. UMass, Department of Entomology/Craig Hollingsworth,
Amherst - Design and Evaluation of Apple IPM Displays
at Massachusetts Farmstands and Pick-Your-Own Orchards. The
projects seeks to develop a tool for agro-environmental education
in Massachusetts apple orchards and to test its impact on orchard
customers. $5,400
7. Massachusetts Farm Bureau Federation, Inc., Ashland
- Feasibility Study for Small Livestock/Poultry Cooperative
Processing & Marketing Program. Study will determine the
potential for cooperative processing and marketing programs
for the producers of small livestock, poultry and exotic
species. $7,000
8. UMass, Department of Plant and Soil Sciences/Frank
Mangan, Amherst - Expanding Specialty Pepper Production
and Integrated Pepper Management on Mass. Vegetable Farms. Research
will provide growers with information needed to expand pepper
markets, expand adoption of Integrated Crop Management in peppers
on farms and expand on new environmentally sound production
practices. $16,753
9. Ronald Smolowitz, Coonamessett Farm, East Falmouth
- Greenhouse Polyculture System. This project will demonstrate
the commercial viability of available greenhouse growing systems
for the production, holding and marketing of aquatic crops.

10. John Bresnahan, Turfgrass Diagnostics and Research,
Longmeadow - Evaluation of the Bioject System for the
Biological Control of Fungal and Nematode Pathogens in a Golf
Course Environment. Field evaluation of pathogen control using
irrigation system delivery of biocontrol organisms. $4,500
11. Valley Processors, Inc., Amherst - Increasing
the Efficiency of In-Woods Fuelwood Processing. Development
of new top-powered feed roll processing equipment will increase
handling, processing and transportation efficiencies for firewood
producers. $24,000 (Grant declined by proposer)
12. The Water Works Group, Westport - Making
a Name for Itself: Brand Identification of the Bay Scallop.
Strategic advertising and marketing programs will
capitalize
on new value added processes like quick individual freezing and on new
shipping and handling systems at the Coastal Growers Association.
