Weeds

Dandelions, Plantain, Ground ivy, Cinquefoil

Life Cycle: Perennialdandelion

Leaf Type: Broad-leaved

Non-Chemical Controls: Mow high so turf can out compete weeds. Mow flower heads to prevent seed production

Chemical Controls: Spot treat with a selective post-emergence herbicide in the Spring or Fall

Crabgrass, Goosegrass, Foxtails, Barnyard-grass

Life Cycle: Summer Annual

Leaf Type: Grassy

Non-Chemical Controls: Do not aerate when crabgrass is germinating because weed seeds will be brought to the surface. Hand pull, removing at least part of the root. Use mulch layers/geotextile fabric. Cultivate and remove weeds from ground.

Chemical Controls: Apply a selective pre-emergence herbicide 10-14 days before germinations in the spring (late April-early May). For crabgrass, apply up to the time the local forsythia ends bloom. Goosegrass germinates 3-4 weeks later

Pineapple-weed, Yellow Wood Sorrell, Prostrate Spurge

Life Cycle: Summer Annual

Leaf Type: Broad-leaved

Non-Chemical Controls: Mow high to shade out germinating and emerging weeds. Use mulch layers/geotextile fabric. Cultivate and remove weeds from ground

Chemical Controls: Apply a post-emergence herbicide once you see weeds; at the 2-5 leaf stage for crabgrass and at an early stage for all other grassy and broadleaf weeds.

Annual Bluegrass

Life Cycle: Winter Annual

Leaf Type: Grassy

Non-Chemical Controls: Mow flower heads to prevent seed production. Correct compaction as many of these weeds are associated with that problem. Use mulch layers/geotextile fabric. Cultivate and remove weeds from ground

Chemical Controls: Apply a selective pre-emergence herbicide 10-14 days prior to germination in the Fall (around September)

Chickweed, Shepherd’s Purse, Yellow Rocket

Life Cycle: Winter Annual

Leaf Type: Broad Leaved

Non-Chemical Controls: Use mulch layers/geotextile fabric. Cultivate and remove weeds from ground

Chemical Controls: Apply a selective post-emergence herbicide in the Spring just before lawns start to re-grow

Yellow Nutsedge, Quackgrass, Nimbleweed, Bromegrass

Life Cycle: Perennial

Leaf Type: Grassy

Non-Chemical Controls: Remove clumps, including entire root system. Aim to control during the first year of growth

Chemical Controls: Spot treat with non-selective herbicide. Be aware that this will kill both the weed and the turf grass as well.
