The Special Commission on Provider Price Variation was established in May of 2016 with the charge of identifying the acceptable and unacceptable factors contributing to price variation in physician, hospital, diagnostic testing, and ancillary services. The Health Policy Commission was identified in the establishing statute (2016 Mass. Acts c. 115 §9) as a supporting agency, along with the Center for Health Information and analysis, to provide relevant data, analysis, and other support as needed to Representative Jeffrey Sánchez and Senator James Welch, Chairs of the Special Commission. Dr. Stuart Altman, Chair of the Health Policy Commission, was appointed as a member of the Special Commission on Provider Price Variation by Senate President Stanley Rosenberg. The Special Commission on Provider Price Variation released its report on March 15, 2017.
