Employment Probationary Period ( M.G.L., Chapter 31 , sections 46, 61, or 65)

Every Civil Service employee must serve a probationary period.

Public safety employees must serve a period of twelve (12) months from the date that they start performing the duties of the position.

Non-public safety employees serve a six month probationary period.

Once a probationary period is served in response to an initial appointment, the employee is not required to serve another probationary period within the same title series. Except for illness, an employee's probationary period may not be extended for any reason. If extended, the extension will equal the amount of time lost due to the illness.
