FIREFIGHTER, MUNICIPAL SERVICE
OPEN COMPETITIVE EXAMINATION

The Human Resources Division (HRD) is currently accepting applications for both components of the 2012 Firefighter, Municipal Service Examination.
This examination consists of two components: the Written examination and the Entry Level Physical Ability Test (ELPAT). Candidates MUST APPLY FOR, TAKE and PASS BOTH components in order to be placed on the eligible list for appointment in a civil service city or town.
The Written examination component will be held on April 28, 2012 at various sites across the Commonwealth.
The ELPAT will be administered from February 2012 through August 2012 at the Hudson National Guard Armory in Hudson, MA.
Please note that there is only one site available for the ELPAT. Candidates will be scheduled on a first-come, first-serve basis. Failure to complete the ELPAT will result in failure of the examination and your name will not be placed on the eligible list. HRD strongly encourages candidates to sign up for and take the ELPAT as soon as possible, due to limited space.
NOTICE TO APPEAR INFORMATION
WRITTEN: A Notice to Appear informing you of where and when to report to take the written component (the location and time of your exam) will be available on-line approximately two weeks prior to the exam date.
You must download and print your Notice to Appear from the HRD Online System (mass.gov/civilservice). If you are unable to access your exam site assignment within 7 days of the written exam, please call (617) 878-9895, or e-mail us at email@example.com.
ELPAT: A Notice to Appear informing you of when to report to take the ELPAT component (the date and time of your exam) at the Hudson Armory will be e-mailed to you approximately 2-7 days after your approved application has been received. If you do not receive your ELPAT site assignment electronically after 7 days of your on-line submission, please e-mail us at PAT.Administrator@hrd.state.ma.us
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: Why should I take the ELPAT before taking the written exam?
A: There is only one site for the ELPAT and to ensure you receive a space it is recommended that you take the ELPAT, as soon as possible, even before taking the written exam.
Q: What happens if I file applications for both components (the written and ELPAT) and subsequently take and fail the ELPAT before the written exam date (April 28, 2012)?
A: Since you did not take the written exam yet but have no chance to be on the eligible list due to failing the ELPAT component, you will receive a refund of the written exam component fee.
Q: What happens if I file applications for both components (the written and ELPAT), take and pass the ELPAT before the written exam date (April 28, 2012) and then fail the written exam?
A: You will not receive a refund for either component since you have taken both components.
Q: I filed an application for the ELPAT and my ELPAT was scheduled for a week later, why so soon?
A: Resources, time and space are limited to conduct the ELPAT which will be running from February 2012 through August 2012. When you apply for the ELPAT you will be AUTO-SCHEDULED for the FIRST available slot in the ELPAT schedule which begins in February 2012. All ELPAT's will be held at the Hudson Amory.
Q: I can’t attend my scheduled ELPAT date, can I re-schedule?
A: With the exception of current military personnel who cannot be in Massachusetts on the scheduled date of the ELPAT, no applicant has a right to a make-up examination due to personal or professional conflicts on the testing date. If you absolutely must reschedule, please email PAT.Administrator@massmail.state.ma.us; please provide a detailed reason for your make-up/rescheduling request and documentation supporting your claim. Please note that rescheduling is not possible within 72 hours of your test date, and will be processed on a first-come, first-serve basis.
