In December 2015, DCAMM transferred to the Town of North Reading the former J.T. Berry State Hospital, approximately 36 +/- acres as part of a sales partnership strategy.
A Request for Proposals for mixed use development was issued in September 2016. The town received four (4) proposals in November 2016, including one for a sports complex and three housing proposals. The Town's Economic Development Committee is currently reviewing these proposals.
The sale partnership strategy is an innovative approach to the Commonwealth’s sale of large surplus state-owned properties to the cities and towns where the properties are located. This strategy provides local governments with control through the zoning process over any future redevelopment while eliminating the Commonwealth’s on-going maintenance and security costs and providing for a carried interest in the properties. This strategy insures that the Commonwealth and its taxpayers realize up to a fifty percent share of any future net profits resulting from the sale and/or lease of all or portions of these properties for redevelopment.
