Overview
These GIS data represent a mosaic of bathymetric datasets for waters off the coast of Massachusetts derived from the most current and accurate sources. Data sources include USGS Open File Reports, NOAA Estuarine Bathymetry, and the NOAA Coastal Relief Model. Since these sources vary in spatial resolution from 2m to 90m, 30 meters was selected to represent a median spatial resolution for mosaicking. The raster dataset is stored in ArcSDE as IMG_BATHYM30M.
Production
The Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management (MA CZM) completed all processing. Using IVS Fledermaus v6.7 - DMagic software, CZM GIS staff (stationed at USGS in Woods Hole, Mass.) imported ASCII gridded data available in USGS Open File Reports or downloaded from NOAA websites (all input data projected UTM zone 19N). The original resolution and sources of data for the various coastal regions are as follows: Boston Harbor (2m and 30m bathymetry from USGS OFR 2006-1008); Nahant to Gloucester (5m bathymetry from USGS OFR 2005-1293); Cape Ann to Salisbury Beach (5m bathymetry from USGS OFR 2008-1373 -- expected Fall 2008); Western Mass Bay & Stellwagen Bank (10m bathymetry from USGS DS-99); NOAA Estuarine Bathymetry N170 (30m bathymetry from Massachusetts Bay); NOAA Estuarine Bathymetry N180 (30m bathymetry from Cape Cod Bay); NOAA Estuarine Bathymetry M010 (30m bathymetry from Buzzards Bay); NOAA Coastal Relief Model (90m bathymetry subset from Volume 1 US North East Atlantic Coast - no land, bathy only). CZM used IVS Fledermaus v6.7 - FMCommand's "dtmmerge" utility to combine the input bathymetry datasets. With IVS Fledermaus v6.7 - DMagic CZM exported the merged DTM as ASCII ArcView Grid. MassGIS imported the Grid into its Oracle/ArcSDE geodatabase.
