Sheriffs FISCAL YEAR 2000 RESOURCE SUMMARY ($000)
Sheriffs are responsible for the administration and management of jails and houses of correction, including correctional alcohol centers, day reporting centers, and boot camp programs. Inmates in these facilities are awaiting trial or serving sentences of less than two and one half years. Sheriffs are also responsible for transporting prisoners and juvenile offenders to and from courts, jails, and hospitals. They also operate civil process offices and provide other services or programs deemed central to the maintenance of public safety. In Massachusetts, Sheriffs are constitutional officers elected to six-year terms. The Sheriff departments of the former Franklin, Hampden, Hampshire, Middlesex, and Worcester counties have been incorporated into the Sheriff departments of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Objectives In Fiscal Year 2000, the former Essex County Sheriff department will become a department of the Commonwealth. Budget Recommendations The amount recommended for Fiscal Year 2000 will enable the Sheriff departments to provide the same level of services as in Fiscal Year 1999. |
