Department of State Police
The Department of State Police provides 24-hour patrol
coverage of 6,300 miles of state highway, Metropolitan District
Commission parkways, historical sites and waterways, and state-owned
properties. State Police detectives work with federal authorities,
District Attorneys, and the Attorney General to enforce narcotics
laws, fight crime, and investigate homicides. The State Police
also provide technical services to local police agencies throughout
the State, including forensic analysis, fingerprint identification,
and commercial vehicle safety enforcement.
Budget Recommendations
The Fiscal Year 1998 recommendation transfers $14.5
million for the State Police Educational Incentive program, the
so-called Quinn Bill, to a new appropriation 8100-0009.

The department of state police is hereby authorized to expend an amount not to exceed twelve million one hundred fifty thousand dollars in revenues collected from fees charged for private police details, for the costs of said details including administrative costs; provided, that notwithstanding the provisions of any general or special law to the contrary, for the purpose of accommodating timing discrepancies between the receipt of retained revenues and related expenditures, the department may incur expenses and the comptroller may certify for payment amounts not to exceed the lower of this authorization or the most recent revenue estimate therefor as reported in the state accounting system
