District Attorney Capeless poses with students from Camp Vision

On August 6, 2009, seven students from Camp VISION (Visually Impaired Students In Our Neighborhoods) met with District Attorney David F. Capeless for a tour of the his office and to talk with him about his role as District Attorney, the functions of the Office, and the responsibilities of his staff.

Camp VISION began five years ago under the direction of Lynn Shortis to provide a local summer program for students in Berkshire County with visual impairments. Housed in the Pittsfield public schools, the program has benefited students from surrounding school districts over the five years including Lee, Lenox, Dalton and Adams. The focus of the camp is to allow students to work on skills that fall under the Expanded Core Curriculum, an area designated by the Department of Education to specifically meet the unique needs of those with visual impairments. Campers are given the opportunity to interact with their visually impaired peers while strengthening their social skills, orientation and mobility around recreation, leisure, and daily life activities.

Camp VISION serves not only as a valuable resource for its participants but is also an enormous asset to the county, as campers spend a great deal of time interacting in the community educating the public about the abilities of those with visual impairments.

This summer students have participated in theater production programs, an adventure ropes course, white water rafting, and collaborating with Ad-Lib to tape a show called Focus on Independent Living, along with many more fun and educational enrichment activities.

The visit to the District Attorney's Office was part of a special project with the Massachusetts Rehabilitation Commission to provide campers with an opportunity to explore future goals and career opportunities. Other sites they have visited include Berkshire Bank, BerkshireWorks, and the Christian Center in Pittsfield.
