Smith pleads guilty to drug charges, sent to prison

A Pittsfield man pleaded guilty this afternoon in Berkshire Superior Court to drug charges.  38 year old BARKIN I. SMITH appeared before Judge Daniel Ford. 

SMITH pleaded guilty to three (3) counts of DISTRIBUTION OF COCAINE, one (1) count of DRUG VIOLATION WITHIN A DRUG FREE SCHOOL ZONE and one (1) count of CONSPIRACY TO VIOLATE DRUG LAWS.  Judge Ford ordered that he serve concurrent 1 day sentences at the Berkshire County House of Correction on the DISTRIBUTION OF COCAINE charges.  SMITH was given concurrent 2 and a half to 3 year state prison sentences at the Massachusetts Correctional Institution at Cedar Junction, to be served on and after the first sentence, on the other charges.   

SMITH sold cocaine in Pittsfield between February 5, 2008 and February 14, 2008. 

The investigation was conducted by members of the Pittsfield, North Adams, Sheffield, Dalton, Lee and Lenox Police Departments and state troopers assigned to the District Attorney’s Office, members of the Berkshire County Drug Task Force.
