"MAssets" - Report on Real Property Owned and Leased by the Commonwealth
The MAssets [Massachusetts Assets] Unit records, maps and reports on the acquisitions and dispositions of all Commonwealth real property. The State owns approximately 12,800 parcels of land in nearly all of the 351 cities and towns across the Commonwealth. This totals over 615,000 acres.
The database also tracks the 79.2 million gross square feet of structures that the Commonwealth owns, including office buildings, university campuses, hospitals, highway depots, skating rinks, pools, residences, and others. These assets are managed by many different state agencies who exercise care and control over the property. The Commonwealth real property portfolio is always changing as property is acquired, transferred between agencies, redeveloped, improved or demolished. The Commonwealth also leases over 7,500,000 square feet of space from the private sector.
