Camp Good News Investigation

District Attorney Michael O’Keefe announced today the arraignment of Richard P. Smith, (4/8/1948) of Media, Pennsylvania.  Mr. Smith was indicted by a Barnstable County Grand Jury for Rape of a Child; Indecent Assault & Battery; and Indecent Assault & Battery upon a Child under the Age of Fourteen (5 counts).  The allegations surround incidents alleged to have taken place in 1981 when Mr. Smith was a counselor at Camp Good News in Sandwich, Massachusetts.  The allegations involve four campers between the ages of eleven and fifteen.

State Police Detectives assigned to the Cape & Islands District Attorney’s Office have investigated allegations involving nine potential perpetrators over a two and a half year period, involving eight states and one foreign country.  Two alleged perpetrators are deceased.  Other allegations have proved unprosecutable due to the running of the applicable statute of limitations.  Some alleged victims do not wish to pursue criminal charges.  Some alleged perpetrators identities are unknown.  Other cases are unprosecutable due to the passage of time and unavailability of confirmatory evidence.

Mr. Smith was arraigned before Superior Court Judge Cornelius J. Moriarity, II, and held on $10,000 cash, $100,000 surety bail.  His next court date is May 8, 2013 for appearance of counsel.
