Fatal Fire in Hyannis

     Cape and Islands District Attorney Michael O’Keefe and State Fire Marshal, Stephen Coan announced today that Hyannis Fire received a 911 call at approximately 5:30PM of a report of an outside fire at 252 Hinckley Road, Hyannis. Upon arrival firemen encountered a shed approximately 8’ x 12’ fully involved in flames. When the fire was extinguished, fire personnel observed the remains of a young child.

     The victim, Savvas Yianasmidis, age 8, was inside the shed playing on his laptop computer with two friends, also age 8. One of the boys alerted the victim’s mother that there was a fire in the shed. She immediately went out to the back yard. At that time the shed was fully engulfed.

     There were indications that gasoline for a lawnmower was stored in the shed and that at least one of the children was playing with a lighter.

     Barnstable Police, Hyannis Fire, State Police assigned to the Fire Marshal’s Office and State Police Detectives assigned to the Cape and Islands District Attorney’s Office are continuing the investigation.
