Law Enforcement Public Service Awards

On May 14 District Attorney Michael O’Keefe was present as his State Police Unit was awarded by U.S. Attorney Carmen Ortiz at the Federal District Courthouse in Boston. This award was given in the category of “Outstanding Collaborative Investigation” and was part of the Law Enforcement Public Service Awards 2014.

Members of the State Police, F.B.I., Falmouth Police, Bourne Police, Mashpee Police, Barnstable Police, Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office, Braintree Police, Scituate Police, United States Postal Inspector Service and United States Internal Revenue Service all worked to bring down a large scale drug operation on Cape Cod. In all, some 30 individuals were originally arrested in operation Buzzards Prey and charged in Federal or State Court. All of the federal defendants were convicted except one who died before trial and 11 of the state defendants were convicted.

The two leaders of the conspiracy, Kelvin Frye and Russell Rose each received sentences of 25 years in Federal Prison. Assistant U.S. Attorney’s James E. Arnold and David J. D’Addio prosecuted federally and the Cape and Islands District Attorney’s Office prosecuted the state cases.

District Attorney O’Keefe said, “This is an example of what can be accomplished when agencies work together.”
