Cynthia Small Guilty Plea
District Attorney Michael O’Keefe and Harwich Police Chief William Mason announce that Cynthia Small (D.O.B. 09/01/1963) of South Chatham, MA plead Guilty last week in Barnstable Superior Court, before the Honorable Judge Gary A. Nickerson, of Larceny Pursuant to a Single Scheme Over $250.00. Today, Small was sentenced to 1 year in the Barnstable County Correctional Facility with 60 days to serve and the balance of the sentence suspended for 3 years. During those three years Small will be on probation and must comply with specific probation conditions including restitution payments up to $60,000.00 as outlined in the civil settlement agreement, mental health and drug addiction evaluation and recommended treatment, and a ban from employment in a job that handles money unless this conviction is disclosed to any future employer.
The case resulted from Small stealing money while employed at the Harwich Ecumenical Council for the Homeless (HECH). HECH is a nonprofit organization headquartered in the town of Harwich and providing low cost housing and child care assistance for qualifying low income families and individuals. Small admitted to stealing over a period of 3 years, from 2009 to 2011. As the sole bookkeeper for HECH, Small had exclusive use of the bookkeeping software and full access to the bank accounts of the organization.
The President of the Board of Directors of HECH spoke at today’s sentencing hearing and expressed his disappointment in Small’s actions and the negative impact they had on HECH’s mission. He also offered his gratitude to the investigators and prosecutors involved.
The case was investigated by the Harwich Police Department and the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office of Bureau of Criminal Investigations, and prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Sharon J. Thibeault.
