MIDDLESEX DIVISION OF THE PROBATE AND FAMILY COURT
OPENS NEW FAMILY LAW INFORMATION CENTER

John R. Buonomo, Register of the Middlesex Probate and Family Court, announced a new center - the first in the state - to assist the sharply increasing number of people who represent themselves in litigation. The new and innovative Middlesex Family Law Information Center at the Court's Cambridge facility is scheduled to open Thursday, June 26 at 3:00 p.m.

"We've seen a dramatic increase in the number of pro se litigants - people who represent themselves in court," said Register Buonomo. Many of these people feel intimidated by the judicial process and this Center is designed to alleviate the problem."

According to the Massachusetts Court System's Annual Report for the fiscal year ending 2002, there were 4, 219 divorces filed in the Middlesex Division. Of these divorces, 1, 904 cases (45%) were filed by pro se plaintiffs.

The Center employs two Administrators who offer assistance and information on court procedures, filing requirements and other information necessary to have cases presented to the court.

In addition, the Family Law Information Center will house the Lawyer for the Day Program, staffed by a volunteer lawyer who provides advice on certain matters, including guardianship of minors brought by people who are indigent; the Protection from Abuse Department; Middlesex Domestic Violence Project; and the Middlesex Family Services Court Clinic which provides immediate counseling services to troubled families.

"The Center will prepare the applicant better for the court experience and will result in shorter lines at the counter and save time in the courtroom", said Buonomo. In addition, the staff will also direct litigants to legal service agencies and lawyer referral services.
