Appeals Court Law Clerk Applicants

Law clerks are law school graduates who act as "elbow" clerks to one or more of the justices, assisting them in researching and writing judicial decisions. The Appeals Court expects to hire approximately twenty-six law clerks for the 2018-2019 court year (August 30, 2018 through August 28, 2019). Application materials must be submitted between August 1 and September 1, 2017. Interviews will be conducted and hiring decisions will be made on a rolling basis between September and December, 2017. The current annual salary is $62,960. Applicants should demonstrate superior academic achievement, an ability to work professionally and independently, and an interest in legal research and writing.

Mission Statement & General Information
The Massachusetts Appeals Court is committed to doing justice under the law by rendering thoughtful, well-reasoned appellate decisions in a timely and efficient manner, treating all those who come before the court fairly and impartially.  It is a court of general appellate jurisdiction, with a large caseload in both criminal and civil matters. Created in 1972, the Appeals Court currently is comprised of a chief justice and twenty-four associate justices. The Chief Justice has two law clerks; the other justices have one.

Please note that pursuant to the provisions of the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986, you will be required to complete an Employment Eligibility Verification form (I-9) and submit specific document(s) that establish your identity and employment eligibility after an offer of employment is made.  Additionally, pursuant to St. 1978, c. 478, sec. 328, any offer of employment is contingent upon your establishing residency in Massachusetts by the starting date of your employment with the Appeals Court.

How to Apply
The court has a centralized application process. Persons interested in a clerkship may apply by submitting one set of the following materials:  a cover letter, resume, copy of a law school transcript, writing sample, completed application for employment (revised 6/16), and two or more letters of recommendation (letters from employers are preferred, they should be addressed to Cheryl Miranda, and they may be sent separately by the recommender). Letters of recommendation will be accepted through September 15, 2017. All other materials are due by September 1, 2017.
