Statement from Supreme Judicial Court Chief Justice Ralph D. Gants, Trial Court Chief Justice Paula M. Carey and Trial Court Administrator Harry Spence on Governor's FY 2017 Budget Proposal

We are grateful for the considerable care taken by the Baker Administration in developing the FY17 judiciary budget.  We are especially grateful for the inclusion of additional funding for statewide expansion of the Housing Court.

The Governor's FY 2017 budget recommends a one percent increase over the current FY 16 budget, for which we extend our appreciation. We will work closely with Legislators and the Baker Administration to bridge the gap between the maintenance budget requested by the Trial Court and the budget recommended by the Governor. There is much common ground among the Executive, Legislative and Judicial Branches, including securing funding for effective functioning of the judicial branch and ensuring that every person in the Commonwealth who struggles with addiction has access to a drug court.

We look forward to partnering with the Legislature and the Baker Administration as the process moves forward to secure the level of funding needed for the effective delivery of justice.
