Chief Justice of the Trial Court Paula M. Carey and Court Administrator Harry Spence announced that they have asked Springfield District Court Clerk-Magistrate John S. Gay to assist the Executive Office of the Trial Court by serving in the role of Regional Director of Court Operations in Western Massachusetts for the next year, in addition to his current responsibilities.
In this role, Mr. Gay will work closely with court officials and staff throughout the region, and with departmental Chief Justices and Deputy Court Administrators, while participating on committees and working groups to advance the Trial Court’s strategic goals and objectives. He will help to develop court-wide initiatives and promote best practices and efficiencies across all Trial Court Departments within Berkshire, Franklin, Hampshire and Hampden Counties.
“We want to leverage the full opportunity represented by the expansion of cross-departmental initiatives undertaken in recent years,” said Chief Justice of the Trial Court Paula Carey. “We have underscored the importance of ‘one mission’ in the strategic plan and we can benefit greatly by sharing knowledge and resources across departments.”
Court Administrator Harry Spence said, “We have an obligation to work collectively to make our operations as efficient as possible, while maintaining the many valuable attributes of specialized jurisdictions. We believe John has the experience and credibility with court leaders in the western part of the state to ensure that they receive needed support and continue to lead the way in piloting new practices and procedures. We want to see how such a role might add value to court operations over the next year.”
Responsibilities of the Western Mass. Director of Court Operations will cover a range of areas, including facilitating the collaborative use of space in multi-department courthouses, maximizing the contribution of regional records maintenance teams; and supporting the development and operation of specialty courts in concert with department and local officials. He will also assist in the implementation of system-wide endeavors, such as identifying cross-departmental best practices and assisting the deployment of managed print services. This designation and additional responsibilities do not involve additional compensation.
Mr. Gay began his Trial Court career 29 years ago, as a Procedure Clerk in the Dorchester Division of the Boston Municipal Court. He later served as an Assistant Clerk-Magistrate in that office before being named a Regional Coordinator for the District Court Administrative Office. In May 2011, Mr. Gay was appointed the Clerk-Magistrate of the Springfield District Court. He served on the Trial Court’s Strategic Planning Process Steering Committee, currently serves on the Strategic Leadership Team, and chairs the Innovation Grant Program. He is originally from Norfolk County, resides in Hampshire County, and is a graduate of Bates College in Maine.
