TRIAL COURT'S
OFFICE OF COURT INTERPRETER SERVICES
TO HOLD PUBLIC HEARINGS ON STANDARDS AND PROCEDURES
Boston,
MA--In an effort to hear from attorneys,
judges, court interpreters, other court personnel, and the
general public about new proposed Standards and Procedures
for interpreter services in the Massachusetts Trial Court,
the Office of Court Interpreter Services of the Administrative
Office of the Trial Court will hold five public hearings in
February. The meetings will be held in Springfield, Fall River,
Cambridge, Lawrence, and Worcester. (see schedule on page
2)
The
written Standards and Procedures will provide interpreters,
judges, attorneys and court staff with information about accessing,
using and providing quality interpreter services in the Trial
Court and with guidelines to follow when requesting interpreter
services or acting as interpreters through the Office of Court
Interpreter Services. Interested individuals may obtain the
proposed Standards and Procedures at www.state.ma.us/courts/admin/interpreters/standards.html.
Requests for copies of the Standards and Procedures and questions
about the hearings may also be directed to the Office of Court

Persons
planning to give oral testimony at the hearings are encouraged
to provide a written summary of the testimony. Written comments
on the proposed Standards and Procedures may be submitted
to the Office of Court Interpreter Services before, during
or after the hearings, but no later than February 14, 2003,
when the hearings close.
The
Office of Court Interpreter Services will arrange and pay
for interpreters for Limited English Proficiency persons wishing
to participate in the hearings. Requests for an interpreter
must be received by the Office at least one week prior to
the hearing for which the service is needed.

comments about the proposed Standards and Procedures should
