NEW SUPREME JUDICIAL COURT
JUSTICE RALPH D. GANTS TAKES OATH
Several
hundred friends, family members, colleagues, court staff,
and well wishers attended the swearing-in ceremony of Justice
Ralph D. Gants of the Supreme Judicial Court on January
29, 2009 in the Great Hall of the John Adams Courthouse.
Governor Deval Patrick, who appointed Justice Gants as
the newest Justice of the Supreme Judicial Court to succeed
recently retired Justice John M. Greaney, administered
the oath of office. Justice Gants will hear oral arguments
for the first time on February 2 when the Court holds its
February sitting.
Chief
Justice Margaret H. Marshall gave welcoming remarks followed
by speakers George Bachrach, master of ceremonies, Justice
Margot Botsford, Governor Patrick, and Justice Gants. The
Governor and his colleagues described Justice Gants as
brilliant, hardworking, fair-minded, caring, and passionate
about the law.
Judge
Gants was first appointed to the Superior Court by then
Governor William F. Weld in 1997. He served as the Administrative
Justice of the Business Litigation Session in the Superior
Court from January 2008 until his appointment to the Supreme
Judicial Court. Previously, he was a partner at Palmer & Dodge;
Assistant U.S. Attorney and Chief of the Public Corruption
Unit there; Special Assistant to Judge William H. Webster,
Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation; and Law
Clerk to Judge Eugene H. Nickerson, U.S. District Court,
Eastern District of New York.
A
graduate of Harvard College, summa cum laude, and Harvard
Law School, magna cum laude, Justice Gants is a prolific
writer and lecturer. He has taught at Northeastern University
School of Law and New England School of Law.
