IN JOHN ADAMS COURTHOUSE
Boston, MA-- For
the first time, the Justices of the Supreme Judicial
Court today heard oral arguments in five cases on
appeal in the new seven-justice courtroom in the
renovated John Adams Courthouse on Pemberton Square.
Members of the legal community and the public filled
the spacious courtroom for the historic, inaugural
sitting. The wood-paneled courtroom with natural
lighting from a large, colorful skylight is equipped
with state-of-the-art audio-visual technology and
web broadcasting capabilities.
The
historic courthouse, originally built between 1886
and 1893, is the permanent, central home of the Massachusetts
judicial branch. The Supreme Judicial Court, the Appeals
Court, and the Social Law Library recently moved into
the courthouse following three years of building renovations
and historic preservation work. Formerly known as the
Old Suffolk County Courthouse, the building was named
the John Adams Courthouse in 2002 in recognition of
John Adams's signifcant contributions to the law and
to society. A center of justice, education, and community,
the John Adams Courthouse welcomes visitors of all
ages.
