SUPREME JUDICIAL COURT APPOINTS ASSISTANT CLERK
OF THE SUPREME JUDICIAL COURT FOR THE COMMONWEALTH

 

Boston, MA--The Justices of the Supreme Judicial Court today announced the appointment of Jane Kenworthy Lewis of Cambridge as the Assistant Clerk of the Supreme Judicial Court for the Commonwealth, in accordance with G.L. c.221, §1.

     As Assistant Clerk, Ms. Lewis will assist the Clerk with her responsibilities and the Justices with their range of responsibilities regarding litigation in the Commonwealth’s courts. Her duties will include helping the Clerk to develop and implement new procedures and policies to enhance the operations of the office, communicating with counsel and unrepresented litigants to explain appellate procedures, coordinating with Trial Court clerks the preparation of papers in appeals to the SJC and the disposition of matters remanded by the SJC, participating in the management and refinement of the Court’s automated docketing system and other management systems, and assisting the Clerk in the hiring, training and supervision of staff.      

      Ms. Lewis has been the Deputy Reporter of Decisions of the Supreme Judicial Court since 1996, and was Assistant Reporter from 1987 until 1996.  Prior to that, Ms. Lewis was a lawyer in the firm of Berman & Moren for three years with a practice in civil and criminal law.She was a solo practitioner from 1982 to 1984.  Ms. Lewis began her legal career as a trial attorney with the Massachusetts Defenders Committee in Middlesex and Essex counties. She is a graduate of Boston University Law School and Boston University, and has taken continuing education courses at Harvard Extension School where she is a candidate for certification in Special Studies in Administration and Management. Ms. Lewis is a member of the Association of Reporters of Judicial Decisions, and holds bar memberships in the Supreme Court of the United States, the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit, the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts, and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.      

     Jane Kenworthy Lewis, originally from Rockport, lives in Cambridge with her husband, Francis H. Duehay, a former Mayor and City Councillor in Cambridge.
