SUPREME JUDICIAL COURT APPOINTS THREE NEW MEMBERS
AND REAPPOINTS TWO MEMBERS TO
COMMITTEE FOR PUBLIC COUNSEL SERVICES
The
Justices of the Supreme Judicial Court recently appointed
three new members and reappointed two members to the Committee
for Public Counsel Services for three-year terms, in accordance
with G.L. c. 211D, §1. The terms expire on March 1,
2009.
The
new appointees are Attorneys Thomas Drechsler of Marblehead,
Margaret R. Guzman of Worcester, and Arnold R. Rosenfeld
of Acton.
The
Justices also reappointed Attorneys Victoria M. Bonilla-Arguda
of Milford, a partner in the Boston law firm Bourbeau & Bonilla,
and Dorothy Meyer Storrow of Gill, a sole practitioner
in Greenfield, who serves as the Committee's vice
chair and secretary.
The
Committee for Public Counsel Services, composed of fifteen
members appointed by the Supreme Judicial Court, plans,
coordinates, and oversees the delivery of legal services
to indigent clients in criminal and certain non-criminal
matters.
Attorney
Drechsler is a partner in the Boston law firm of Finneran,
Byrne & Drechsler, LLP, where he has worked since 1985.
Previously, he served as an Assistant District Attorney
in Essex County for two years and in Middlesex County from
1979 to 1983. He is a member of the Board of Directors
of the Essex County Bar Association, and a member of the
Massachusetts Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and
the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. Mr.
Drechsler holds a J.D. degree, cum laude, from Boston College
Law School, an M.S. degree from the Polytechnic Institute
of New York, and a B.E. degree, cum laude, from New York
University School of Engineering and Science.
In
private practice since 2005, Attorney Guzman first served
as a trial attorney for thirteen years in the Public Defender
Division of the Committee for Public Counsel Services in
Worcester. She is a member of the Massachusetts Association
of Criminal Defense Lawyers and was on the Board of Directors
in 2001. She is also a former member of the Massachusetts
Association of Hispanic Attorneys. Active in community
affairs, Ms. Guzman earned a B.A. degree, magna cum laude,
from Clark University, where she graduated Phi Beta Kappa.
She received a J.D. degree from Boston University School
of Law.
Attorney
Rosenfeld is Of Counsel to Kirkpatrick & Lockhart Nicholson
Graham, LLP in the law firm's Boston office. Prior
to joining the firm in 1999, he served for eight years
as Chief Bar Counsel for the Board of Bar Overseers of
the Supreme Judicial Court. He also served as Chief Counsel
of the Committee for Public Counsel Services, Deputy Chief
Counsel for the Massachusetts Defenders Committee, and
Executive Director of the Committee on Criminal Justice.
A former member of the Supreme Judicial Court Advisory
Committee on Criminal Rules, he currently serves on the
Court's Standing Committee on the Rules of Professional
Conduct. From 1991 to 1999, he was a member of the National
Organization of Bar Counsel, and he served as chair of
the Massachusetts Criminal History Systems Board from 1972
to 1975. He is a member of the Boston Bar Association and
the American Bar Association. Mr. Rosenfeld is a visiting
professor at Boston University Law School and an adjunct
professor at Northeastern University Law School. Formerly,
he was on the adjunct faculty of Suffolk University Law
School. Mr. Rosenfeld graduated with a J.D. degree from
Boston College Law School and an A.B. degree, cum laude,
from Bowdoin College.
