CONSTRUCTION BEGINS ON NEW WORCESTER TRIAL COURT

Worcester, MA—Supreme Judicial Court Chief Justice Margaret H. Marshall, Chief Justice for Administration and Management Robert A.Mulligan, Governor Mitt Romney, legislators, and local officials celebrated the beginning of construction of the Worcester Trial Court with a groundbreaking ceremony in downtown Worcester on June 25.

“This splendid, modern courthouse will be a center of justice in which judges, lawyers, court employees and the public they serve will be justifiably proud,” Chief Justice Marshall said. “Today is an important, long awaited milestone for the Worcester community, and we look forward with great anticipation to the opening day.”

Chief Justice Mulligan said, “Not only is the courthouse well planned and designed, justice will be administered in a secure, fully equipped, efficient, and modern facility, and one which has been designed to accommodate future growth. I am deeply grateful to all the state and local officials, and many judges, lawyers, and court employees, who have worked together to make this new courthouse a reality for the people of Worcester.”

The Courthouse, scheduled to be completed in 2007, will house all five Worcester Trial Court Departments: the Worcester District Court, Worcester Housing Court, Worcester County Juvenile Court, Worcester Probate and Family Court, and Worcester Superior Court. It will become the largest court facility in Massachusetts, with twenty-six courtrooms, court office space, a grand jury room, hearing rooms, public lobbies and transaction areas, and secure holding facilities for detainees.
