Brian H. Redmond, the new Reporter of Decisions for the Supreme Judicial Court and the Appeals Court

The Justices of the Supreme Judicial Court today announced that they have appointed Brian H. Redmond as the new Reporter of Decisions for the Supreme Judicial Court and the Appeals Court, effective July 1, 2012. Mr. Redmond succeeds C. Clifford Allen, who retired as Reporter of Decisions in June.

The Reporter provides editorial support for the Justices of the Supreme Judicial Court and the Appeals Court, publishes slip opinions daily in printed and electronic formats, and administers a contract for the publication of printed advance sheets and permanent bound volumes of the official reports of the two courts.

Mr. Redmond joined the Office of the Reporter of Decisions in 2001 as an Assistant Reporter, and was promoted to Deputy Reporter in 2006. Prior to joining the Reporter's office, he worked for fourteen years at Lawyers Cooperative Publishing and West Group, first as an editor and publication editor, then as a product manager. A native of Rochester, New York, Mr. Redmond is a graduate of Saint Bonaventure University and Cornell Law School, and he is admitted to practice in New York and Massachusetts. He is a Pembroke resident.

Mr. Redmond will serve as the eighteenth Reporter. The office of the Reporter of Decisions was established in 1803, but the first Reporter was not appointed until 1804. Today, the authority and duties of the Reporter of Decisions are governed by G. L. c. 221, §§ 63-68, and G. L. c. 211A, § 9.

The advance sheets published by the Reporter's office in Massachusetts are the most timely printed advance sheets in the nation, with all cases released each Thursday through Wednesday mailed to subscribers the following Friday. To date, the Reporter has published 461 bound volumes of Massachusetts Reports and 79 bound volumes of Massachusetts Appeals Court Reports.
