Boston, MA—Supreme Judicial Court Chief Justice Margaret H. Marshall recently reappointed Superior Court Judge Nonnie S. Burnes as Chair of the Jury Management Advisory Committee for a three year-term, ending on May 1, 2008, and reappointed Superior Court Judge Peter M. Lauriat as a member for a two-year term, ending on May 1, 2007.

          The Supreme Judicial Court Justices reappointed Attorney James S. Bolan to the Advisory Committee on Ethical Opinions for Clerks of Court for a five year term, which expires on May 1, 2010.

          The Jury Management Advisory Committee, which consists of six justices appointed by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Judicial Court, according to G.L.c. 234A, §6, is a standing committee of the Court and is charged with assisting the Chief Justice in supervising the Office of Jury Commissioner.

          Judge Burnes was appointed to the bench in 1996. Prior to her appointment, she was a commissioner of the State Ethics Commission for two years. She also was a partner in the former Boston law firm of Hill & Barlow. She served as chair of the Court's Gender Equality Advisory Board and is a board member of the James D. St. Clair Federal Court Education Project. She is also on the Board of Trustees of Northeastern University. Judge Burnes received her J.D. degree from Northeastern University School of Law and her B.A degree from Wellesley College.

          Judge Lauriat has been a Superior Court judge since 1989. Prior to his appointment to the bench, he practiced law in Boston for seventeen years. He is an alumnus of the University of Chicago Law School and Middlebury College. Judge Lauriat has taught at Harvard Law School and the National Judicial College, and he has written and lectured nationally on litigation and jury trial issues and techniques. He is a Trustee of the Flaschner Judicial Institute.

          Created in 1990, the Advisory Committee on Ethical Opinions for Clerks of the Court renders advisory opinions to Clerks, Registers and their assistants, and individuals nominated to be clerks who seek advice "with respect to the interpretation of rules of court relating to the ethical and professional conduct of Clerk-Magistrates," according to the Code of Professional Responsibility for Clerks of the Courts, SJC Rule 3:12.

          Mr. Bolan is head of the Litigation Department in the Newton law firm of Brecher Wyner Simons Fox & Bolan LLP. He is the author and editor of The New Rules of Professional Conduct: The Impact on Ethical Practice in Massachusetts, co-editor and co-author of Ethical Lawyering in Massachusetts, and chapter author of the Massachusetts Attorney Conduct Manual. A graduate of Boston College Law School and Trinity College, he is a founding member of the Association of Professional Responsiblility Lawyers and served as president from 2001 to 2002. He has taught at Boston University Law School and New England School of Law.
