TWENTY BOSTON PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOL SCHOOL STUDENTS
LEARNING ABOUT THE LAW IN SUPREME JUDICIAL COURT’S
2006 JUDICIAL YOUTH CORPS PROGRAM

Judges, lawyers, and court employees are helping twenty Boston public high school students learn about the court system and the rule of law in the sixteenth annual Judicial Youth Corps program. Volunteering as instructors, supervisors, or mentors, the judges, court staff, and attorneys are teaching students about criminal and civil law, covering topics such as juvenile justice, landlord-tenant issues, family law, mediation, and the appellate process.

The Judicial Youth Corps program began in May and June with six weekly educational sessions. In July and August the students are working as paid summer interns in courts throughout Suffolk County with clerks, probation officers, and other court staff. They also are continuing weekly educational sessions, including field trips to the Nashua Street Jail and the Boston Police Department. They also will be “shadowing” judges to learn first hand how trials are conducted. The Boston Private Industry Council is providing funds for the summer internships.
