Ceremony Tops Off New Worcester Trial Court
Worcester — Calling the new Worcester Trial Court the "flagship of the courthouse construction program," Chief Justice for Administration and Management Robert A Mulligan praised the construction workers and trade unions for their hard work at a Topping Off Ceremony on August 17 at the site of the 420,000 square-foot courthouse being built in downtown Worcester. Joining with Chief Justice Mulligan at the ceremony to thank the hundreds of laborers who have worked on the project and to celebrate a significant construction milestone were DCAM Deputy Commissioner Michael L. McKimmey, State Senator Harriet Chandler, Worcester Mayor Timothy P. Murray, Gilbane Building Company Senior Vice President Dan McConaghy, and Gilbane Building Company Project Manager William Kearney, who emceed the event.
A centuries-old Scandinavian tradition, a "Topping Off" is when the last structural beam of the construction project, signed by the workers, is hoisted into place with an evergreen tree on top to signify the achievement and a respect for the land.
The largest courthouse in the Commonwealth with 26 courtrooms, the Worcester Trial Court will house the Worcester District Court, Housing Court, Juvenile Court, Probate and Family Court, Superior Court, and the Worcester County District Attorney's Office. The courthouse is scheduled for completion in 2007.
