JUDICIAL YOUTH CORPS STUDENTS RECEIVE ACHIEVEMENT
AWARDS FOR SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF PROGRAM

Boston - Fourteen Boston public high school students today were awarded certificates of achievement for their successful completion of the Supreme Judicial Court’s Judicial Youth Corps program at the annual Appreciation Day ceremony held at the Supreme Judicial Court.  Justice Roderick L. Ireland was the keynote speaker and presented the students with their certificates.

Now in its 14th year, the annual Judicial Youth Corps program teaches young people about criminal and civil law and the role of the judiciary.  Working closely with judges, clerks, lawyers, and court employees, the students gain valuable job experience in the summer while learning about the judicial branch.  In the spring, the students attend weekly interactive orientation sessions on various aspects of the court system, including juvenile and family law, housing court issues, small claims, and mediation. They also participate in field trips and mock trials during the 14-week program.

This summer the students worked at the Boston Housing Court; Boston Municipal Court, including the Central, Dorchester, Roxbury and West Roxbury Divisions; Suffolk Probate and Family Court; Suffolk County Superior Court, and the Supreme Judicial Court.

The Supreme Judicial Court’s Public Information Office administers the Judicial Youth Corps progam with the assistance of attorney Gerald Howland, headmaster of Another Course to College, a Boston Public High School.  The Boston Private Industry Council provided grant funds this year to pay for the student internships.
