Supreme Judicial Court Justice Roderick L. Ireland
will be the keynote speaker and will award special certificates
to fifty inner-city high school students from Suffolk
County, Worcester, and Springfield for completing an
intensive educational program about the Massachusetts
court system.
Beginning in May, the Judicial Youth
Corps students attend weekly sessions with judges, lawyers,
and court employees, who volunteer to teach and mentor
the students using group discussion and mock trial techniques.
In the summer, the students put their knowledge to work
in various courts as interns and continue their educational
sessions on topics ranging from criminal justice and
alternative dispute resolution to housing, family and
juvenile court issues.
Celebrating its tenth year, the innovative Judicial
Youth Corps program has been recognized by the American
Bar Association as a model court and community program
serving young people.
