NEWBURYPORT SUPERIOR COURT COURTHOUSE MARKS
200 YEAR HISTORY WITH CELEBRATION
Hundreds of people gathered at the historic Newburyport Superior Court Courthouse on September 16 to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the courthouse, which was built in 1805 and was originally designed by famed architect Charles Bulfinch. Speaking at the ceremony were Lieutenant Governor Kerry Healey, Supreme Judicial Court Chief Justice Margaret H. Marshall, Chief Justice for Administration and Management Robert A. Mulligan, Superior Court Chief Justice Barbara J. Rouse, Newburyport Superior Court Judge Richard E. Welch III, and Division of Capital Asset Management Commissioner David B. Perini. The courthouse, which is listed in the National Register of Historic Places, is the nation’s oldest continuously operating courthouse.
