The
seven Justices of the Supreme Judicial Court will hear
oral arguments in five cases on appeal in
Essex Superior Court in Salem. The Court previously held
a sitting in Salem in January 1993 to commemorate the
Supreme Judicial Court’s tercentenary.
The
sitting in Essex County is part of the Supreme Judicial
Court’s continuing community outreach to enable the
public to have broader access to the Court’s sittings.
Teachers and students from Essex County have
been invited to attend as an educational opportunity. People of all ages are welcome to attend the
sitting.
Established
in 1692, the Supreme Judicial Court, the state’s highest
court, is the oldest appellate court in continuous existence
in the Western Hemisphere. The SJC operates under the oldest written constitution
in the world.
