SUPREME JUDICIAL COURT TO HOLD SITTING IN SALEM
ON TUESDAY, OCTOBER 2

What:

The seven Justices of the Supreme Judicial Court will hear oral arguments in five cases on appeal in Essex Superior Court in Salem.  The Court  previously held a sitting in Salem in January 1993 to commemorate the Supreme Judicial Court’s tercentenary. 

The sitting in Essex County is part of the Supreme Judicial Court’s continuing community outreach to enable the public to have broader access to the Court’s sittings.  Teachers and students from Essex County have been invited to attend as an educational opportunity.  People of all ages are welcome to attend the sitting.

Established in 1692, the Supreme Judicial Court, the state’s highest court, is the oldest appellate court in continuous existence in the Western Hemisphere.  The SJC operates under the oldest written constitution in the world.

Tuesday, October 2, 2001
9:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

Where: Essex Superior Court

Note: Oral arguments for each case take approximately thirty minutes. Seating is on a first come, first served basis.  A separate courtroom equipped with a television monitor will be available for overflow crowds. The SJC Rule for cameras in the courtroom will apply.
