MASSACHUSETTS
JUDGES, ATTORNEYS AND LEGISLATOR PARTICIPATE
IN JUDICIAL EXCHANGE DURING VISIT TO TOMSK, RUSSIA
Boston, MA-Seven members of the Massachusetts
legal community, including a Justice of the Supreme Judicial
Court, visited Tomsk, Russia, from October 11 to 18 to conduct
educational sessions on the Americal legal system as part
of an ongoing judicial exchange between the Massachusetts
courts and the courts of the Tomsk region of Siberia. Members
of the delegation, from left, were: Middlesex County Sheriff’s
Department Attorney Lee J. Gartenberg; Committee for Public
Counsel Services Attorney Geoffrey C. Packard; Norfolk County
Assistant District Attorney Tanya Karpiak, State Representative
Kevin J. Murphy; Superior Court Judge Mary-Lou Rup, Assistant
U.S. Attorney William Welch II; and Supreme Judicial Court
Justice Robert J. Cordy. The members of the group discussed
the jury process and criminal procedures during their meetings
with judges, prosecutors, defense attorneys, law professors,
students, and prison officials during their week in Tomsk.
Their trip was preceded by a Tomsk delegation’s visit to Boston
in September. The partnership is funded by the Library of
Congress’ Russian American Rule of Law Project.
