SUPREME JUDICIAL COURT APPOINTS NEW MEMBERS
 TO COMMITTEE ON JUDICIAL ETHICS

BostonThe Justices of the Supreme Judicial Court today announced the appointments of Appeals Court Justice Barbara A. Lenk and Middlesex Juvenile Court Judge Jay D. Blitzman as members of the Committee on Judicial Ethics, effective immediately.  Judge Lenk fills the unexpired portion of Superior Court Judge Constance Sweeney’s term, which expires on August 31, 2001.  Judge Blitzman fills the position formerly held by Framingham District Court First Justice Robert V. Greco, whose term has ended.  Judge Blitzman’s term will expire on August 31, 2005.

The Committee on Judicial Ethics provides advisory opinions to judges and judicial nominees “with respect to the interpretation of rules of court relating to the ethical and professional conduct of judges,” according to SJC Rule 3:11.  The SJC appoints the five members, at least three of whom are judges or former judges.

Justice Lenk was first appointed by Governor William F.Weld to the Superior Court in 1993, and  two years later, was appointed by him to the Appeals Court.  Judge Blitzman was appointed to the Middlesex Juvenile Court in 1996 by Governor Weld.

The other Committee members are Superior Court Judge James F. McHugh, who serves as chairman; Suffolk Probate and Family Court Judge John M. Smoot; and Harvard Law School  Professor Andrew L. Kaufman.
