JUDICIAL COURT APPOINTS NEW MEMBERS
TO COMMITTEE ON JUDICIAL
ETHICS
Boston—The Justices of the Supreme Judicial Court today announced
the appointments of Appeals Court Justice Barbara A. Lenk
and Middlesex Juvenile Court Judge Jay D. Blitzman as members
of the Committee on Judicial Ethics, effective immediately.
Judge Lenk fills the unexpired portion of Superior
Court Judge Constance Sweeney’s term, which expires on August
31, 2001. Judge Blitzman
fills the position formerly held by Framingham District Court
First Justice Robert V. Greco, whose term has ended.
Judge Blitzman’s term will expire on August 31, 2005.
The Committee on Judicial Ethics provides
advisory opinions to judges and judicial nominees “with respect
to the interpretation of rules of court relating to the ethical
and professional conduct of judges,” according to SJC Rule
3:11. The SJC appoints
the five members, at least three of whom are judges or former
judges.
Justice Lenk was first appointed by Governor
William F.Weld to the Superior Court in 1993, and
two years later, was appointed by him to the Appeals
Court. Judge Blitzman was appointed to the Middlesex
Juvenile Court in 1996 by Governor Weld.
The other Committee
members are Superior Court Judge James F. McHugh, who serves
as chairman; Suffolk Probate and Family Court Judge John M.
Smoot; and Harvard Law School
Professor Andrew L. Kaufman.
