Honorable Roderick L. Ireland was sworn in as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Judicial Court on Monday, December 20, 2010, in front of several hundred well wishers in the Great Hall of the John Adams Courthouse. With his hand resting on a Bible held by his 93-year-old mother, Helen, Chief Justice Ireland recited the oath administered by Governor Deval Patrick and became the first African American Chief Justice in the Court's 318-year history. Chief Jusice Ireland has served as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Judicial Court since 1997.
