J. Michael Ruane Judicial Center Officially Opens in Salem
State and local officials participated in the official opening ceremony of the J. Michael Ruane Courthouse in Salem on February 28th.
Chief Justice Robert A. Mulligan welcomed court employees, community leaders and the families of the late Representative Ruane and the late Chief Justice Samuel E. Zoll. He provided an overview of Rep. Ruane’s passion for Salem throughout his long public service career.
Lieutenant Governor Timothy P. Murray, Supreme Judicial Court Justice Robert J. Cordy, and DCAM Commissioner Carole Cornelison commended the collaboration and creativity of local leaders which led to the construction of the new judicial complex in historic Salem. To create space for the courthouse, a 204-year-old church on the site was relocated and incorporated into the complex as the Law Library.
Senator Frederick E. Berry, Representative John D. Keenan, and Mayor Kimberley Driscoll highlighted the local and state partners who supported their vision to enhance the city of Salem and bring the delivery of justice in Essex County into the 21st century.
Superior Court Judge Howard J. Whitehead commended the ongoing dedication of the employees who serve all the court departments in the complex. Mass. Bar Association President-Elect Robert Holloway, Jr., a local practitioner, extended the bar’s appreciation for the new state-of-the-art courthouse. Chief Justice Mulligan recognized the many DCAM and court employees, designers and contractors who supported the construction and relocation.
Mass. Bar Association President-Elect Robert Holloway, Jr., former president of the Essex County Bar, provided a message of behalf of the bar.
At the conclusion of the ceremony, a plaque dedicated to the memory of Chief Justice Zoll was unveiled by his wife, son and granddaughter outside the District Court arraignment courtroom. Chief Justice Zoll had served as Mayor of Salem and led the District Court from 1976 to 2004.
