Probation
Officers to Maintain PEACE at High School Hockey
and Basketball Championships
Dressed in safety vests, with the word
PROBATION emblazoned on the back, more than 200 Probation
Officers will maintain a presence at two of the biggest
high school sports tournaments of the season to help
diffuse violence and to identify court-involved individuals
who have caused trouble at games in the past. This two-year-old effort is called the
Probation Enhancing Athletic Climate Excellence, better
known as the PEACE Partnership Community Probation
Initiative. High School Division IA Ice Hockey and
Boys Basketball games are being played throughout the
state under the watchful eye of Probation Officers. "We are very pleased with the way the
PEACE Partnership has grown. The Partnership has made
the tournament experience a pleasant one for spectators," said
Steve Fratalia, the brainchild of the initiative This week, Semi-final hockey games will
take place at the Brown Arena on the campus of Boston
University. Two games are scheduled for 6 and 8 p.m.
on Thursday. State finals for Divisions III, II, I,
and IA are scheduled for Sunday, March 19 th, at TD
Banknorth Garden (former Boston Garden) at noon. The State Championships for Boys Basketball
are also scheduled for next week. Championship games
will take place on Saturday, March 18 th, at the DCU
Center (former Worcester Centrum) in Worcester at 10:45
a.m., 12:30 p.m., 2:15 p.m., 4 p.m., 5:45 p.m. and
7:30 p.m. PEACE is an alliance between the Office
of the Commissioner of Probation (OCP) and the Massachusetts
Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA), a private,
non-profit association organized by its member schools
to regulate, coordinate, and promote athletic programs
for high school students. Under the PEACE initiative,
probation officers are assigned to a tournament safety
team at the stadiums where the Superbowl games are
played. Other tournament safety team members include
site supervisors, school administrators, teachers,
stadium security personnel and local police.
