Probation employees from the Office of the Commissioner of Probation (OCP) and the Office of Community Corrections (OCC) faced off on the ice as part of the second annual Kevin P. Duggan Hockey Championship at Murphy’s Rink in South Boston recently.

The tournament is held annually to honor the memory of Kevin Duggan, former Statewide Supervisor of the Massachusetts Trial Court Community Service Program, who was an avid hockey player and fan. Duggan passed away in 2006 at the age of 56.

Duggan’s friends, family members, and colleagues packed the small rink to cheer on the teams and reminisce about the well-liked and respected man with the cheerful disposition. While the OCC team secured the Kevin P. Duggan Championship Cup with a 6-5 score in overtime, players and coaches from both teams as well as those who filled the bleachers enjoyed the contest and the chance to pay homage to a cherished friend and colleague as well as partake in Duggan’s hockey passion. In addition to his love of the game, Duggan was a tireless advocate of the Community Service program and its benefits to the public and the offenders who were ordered to do community service.

June will mark the third anniversary of Duggan’s death. In life, Duggan was a talented hockey player and goalie for the LA Kings, a minor (development) league team, Boston State College (UMASS-Boston), and Hingham High School. He also served as a coach for Curry College and Noble and Greenough School. At Noble, he coached the girl’s hockey team—leading them to three New England Championships. Two of the young women from that team played for the last USA Girls team in the Olympics.

Second Deputy Commissioner Fran Wall expressed appreciation to the spectators who came out to cheer on the two teams, “It was a great sight to see – all of the fans who came out in honor of Kevin’s memory.”

Stephen Price, Executive Director of Community Corrections and OCC Head Coach, said “This annual event is a great opportunity to acknowledge someone we all cared for deeply and to appreciate Kevin’s passion for hockey.”

Reflecting on his friendship with Duggan, David Skocik, Statewide Supervisor of the Massachusetts Trial Court Community Service Program and a member of the OCC Hockey team, said "The overwhelming support from our spectators and players was a wonderful tribute to Kevin's memory through the game he loved and played. A great thanks to all for keeping alive this special day.”

Mark McHale, Suffolk County Regional Supervisor and a forward on the OCP Hockey team, commented, “This event brings everyone together. It is a joyful event. Everybody is happy and everybody has fun.”

Norfolk County Assistant Court Services Coordinator Jimmy Schindler scored the winning goal for the victorious OCC team. Suffolk County Statewide Program Supervisor Josh Wallace served as the team’s goaltender and Assistant Statewide Supervisior Christopher Cannata was assistant coach. Statewide Superior Skocik and Middlesex County Assistant Court Services Coordinator Sean Duggan played defensive line. Boston Juvenile Resource Center (JRC) Program Specialist Casey Reasonover was on the offensive line.

Also representing the winning OCC team and playing defensive/offensive line were Regional Manager Timothy Callahan; Suffolk Assistant Court Services Coordinator Martin Cunniff; Suffolk Regional Manager Timothy Gagnon; Boston JRC Monitor Mark Lanzilli; Boston JRC Teacher Peter Cahill; Suffolk Court Services Coordinator Jimmy Schindler; College Intern Pat Collins; Suffolk County Intern John Collins; Suffolk Assistant Court Services Coordinator Michael Collins; Suffolk County Assistant Court Services Coordinator Bob Doherty; Suffolk Assistant Court Services Coordinator Jeff Striano; Suffolk County Program Manager Mike Hayes; Suffolk Assistant Statewide Supervisor Timothy Pasquale; and Plymouth Assistant Court Services Coordinator Matt Rogers. Price was head coach and Deputy Director Patricia Horne served as assistant coach. Rounding out the team were manager Deborah MacDonald, Assistant Manager Chandra Shultz, Team Scout Michael “Lucky” LeCours, and Photographer Lisa Hickey.

The opposing OCP team featured starting forwards Wall; Middlesex County Regional Administrator Brian Murphy; McHale, Suffolk County Regional Administrator; and Regional Supervisor Richard O’Neil. Also in the forward position were Suffolk Superior Court Probation Officer Tom Connolly; Wrentham District Court Probation Officer Joe Bianculli; Deputy Commissioner/Legal Counsel Christopher Bulger; Essex County Chief Probation Officer Martin Wallace; Suffolk Probation Officer in Charge (POIC) Rick Joyce; Norfolk POIC Jay Brennan; Middlesex POIC Richard Wright; Worcester POIC Marty Wallace; and Norfolk Superior Court Probation Officer Mike Buckley.

Springfield District Court Chief Probation Officer John Morganstern, played defense as did Acting Hampden Superior Court Chief Probation Officer Steven Ashe; Suffolk Probate & Family Associate Probation Officer Ed McHale; Hampshire Probate & Family Probation Officer John Hoar; and Middlesex Probate and Family Probation Officer John Gilpatrick. Boston Police Officer Bill Hubbard served as goalie. On Injury Reserve were Suffolk POIC Jim Concannon and Probation Officer Paul Keefe. Commissioner O’Brien led the team as head coach with assistant coaches: First Deputy Commissioner Elizabeth Tavares and Deputy Commissioner William Burke.
