Recipients of 2007 Probation Employee Recognition Awards
Are Chosen: State House Ceremony to Mark Several Firsts

Eleven support staff, one First Assistant Chief Probation Officer, three Assistant Chief Probation Officers, four Probation Officers and two Associate Probation Officers will be among the honorees recognized at the fifth annual Probation Employee Recognition Ceremony at the State House on Friday, May 18th. The celebration will also mark the first time that the inaugural Kevin Duggan Community Service Award will be presented.

The 2007 Awards Ceremony is the first time in the ceremony’s five-year history that support staff have dominated the awards.

“All of the employees who will be honored are so deserving of this award and I am pleased to recognize them for their efforts,” Commissioner John J. O’Brien said.

Among the 11 support staff are Linda Overberg, Essex Juvenile Court Probation Office Supervisor; Patricia A. Jaworski, Haverhill District Court Probation Office Manager; Donna Smola, Springfield District Court Probation Office Manager; Susan A. MacDougall, Eastern Hampshire District Court Probation Operations Supervisor; Teresa LaFreniere, Hampshire Probate & Family Court Probation Operations Supervisor II; Nancy J. Kistner, Marlborough District Court Probation Office Manager; Kelly Nassif, Somerville District Court Probation Case Specialist IV; Martha Calder, Waltham District Court Probation Office Manager; Jackie Laumann-Coyne, Boston Municipal – West Roxbury District Court Probation Case Coordinator II; Sharon Aro, Westborough District Court Account Clerk I; and Myrna Rodriguez Laboy, Worcester Juvenile Court Probation Case Specialist IV.

Associate Probation Officers Cori A. Harrington of Bristol Probate & Family Court and Elaine Hatch of Stoughton District Court are among the honorees.

First Assistant Chief Probation Officer Therese Cormier of Bristol Juvenile Court and Assistant Chief Probation Officers: Paul M. Robinson of Barnstable Superior Court; Joseph (Jay) Brien of Norfolk Superior Court; and Victor M. Melendez of Suffolk Probate & Family Court will be presented with awards.

Among the four Probation Officers who will be recognized at the State House ceremony are Victor Correia of Fall River District Court, Keith Bourdon of Taunton District Court, Stephen Brown of Essex Juvenile Court, and Fiona Bycroft Ryder of Worcester Juvenile Court.

Following the Probation Employee Recognition Awards Ceremony will be the presentation of the Kevin Duggan Community Service Award. Attleboro District Court Judge Gregory Phillips and Boston Municipal Court Dorchester Division Judge Sydney Hanlon are the recipients.

The award is named in honor of Kevin Duggan, former Statewide Supervisor for the Massachusetts Trial Court Community Service Program, who passed away during the summer of 2006.

“We want to recognize Kevin’s great work by honoring two judges who use community service as a way to enhance neighborhoods and improve the lives of offenders,” said Commissioner John J. O’Brien.

Duggan has been credited for building the program into one that has had a positive impact on communities throughout the Commonwealth. In the past year, offenders in the program logged in more than 300,000 hours of community service, making the program one of the most efficiently-run and largest community service programs in the state.
