Hampden
Superior Court Probation Officer Alberto
Perez, a member of the Massachusetts Army
National Guard, is in Louisiana helping with
the recovery effort and providing support
and relief to devastated families.
"P.O.
Perez's National Guard Assignment is that
of Chaplain Services and I am sure he is
giving the needed help and comfort to the
victims of this horrific disaster," said
Hampden Superior Court Chief Probation
Officer Michael Ghazil.
Perez,
an 18-year Probation Officer who is assigned
to the Joint Forces Headquarters of the
National Guard, reported for duty on Sunday
in Milford and left with his unit for an
expected 18-day stay. As the Senior Statewide
Chaplain's Assistant in the National Guard,
Perez is trained to provide support and
counseling services to families.
Yesterday,
Perez reported that his unit rescued a
75-year-old woman from her home. She was
safely evacuated. The unit, however, encountered
tragedy when they responded to a local
man's request to find his 91-year-old mother.
The woman, trapped by flood waters in her
home, was found dead. Perez's unit provided
support to the woman's son.
Perez
has served in the Massachusetts Army National
Guard since 1989. His current rank is Sergeant
First Class. As a member of the Chaplain
Services, Perez's unit is often attached
to various National Guard squads. He has
served with the First Battalion 10 th Infantry
of the Massachusetts Army National Guard,
according to his wife, Monica Perez.
Prior
to his service with the Massachusetts Army
National Guard, Perez served in active
duty in the United States Marine Corps
from 1976 to 1979. He also served in the
United States Marine Corps Reserves from
1980 to 1989, achieving the rank of Staff
