BARNSTABLE
SUPERIOR COURT CHIEF RECIPIENT OF PRESTIGIOUS AWARD
Barnstable
Superior Court Chief Probation Officer Joseph Hassett was recently
presented with the St. Thomas More Award for Service for his "distinguished
service" in the field of Justice.
Hassett
- along with two judges and an attorney - were recognized
during the Red Mass service, celebrated by Bishop George
Coleman at St. Mary's Cathedral in Fall River. Chief
Justice Robert A. Mulligan was the keynote speaker.
Honorable Judges James M. Cronin and John A. Markey
and Attorney Francis M. O'Boy were among the other
recipients.
"I
was very surprised and grateful to be a recipient of
this award. I consider it a great honor," said Hassett,
a 31-year employee of the Massachusetts Probation Service
and chairman of the statewide Media Relations Committee
for the Office of the Commissioner of Probation.
The
awards are named for St. Thomas More, a 16th-century
English layman who was a lawyer and martyred for opposition
to the divorce of England's King Henry VIII and for
refusing to renounce papal authority, according to
the anchor, a publication of the archdiocese of New
Bedford. During the Red Mass, where the award is presented,
the priest wears red vestments. The award is a bronze
medal medalion with the likeness of St. Thomas Moore
on the front and an inscription on the back. A dinner
and reception followed the ceremony at White's Restaurant
in Westport.
Hassett
was appointed Chief Probation Officer at Barnstable
Superior Court in 1993. Prior to his appointment, he
served as a Probation Officer in Barnstable Superior
Court and as a Probation Officer in Barnstable District
Court. He also is a member of the Community Leadership
Institute of Cape Cod.
