Supreme Judicial Court Justices Appoint
Acting Clerk for the Commonwealth
The Justices of the Supreme Judicial Court have appointed Jane Kenworthy Lewis as Acting Clerk for the Commonwealth as provided in G. L. c. 221, s. 1., effective August 1. This appointment fills a vacancy following the recent retirement of Clerk Susan Mellen. Ms. Lewis has served as Assistant Clerk for the Commonwealth since 2001.
A posting for the position of Clerk for the Commonwealth is available on the Supreme Judicial Court's website. The deadline for applications is August 23.
The Clerk for the Commonwealth is the head of the public office that manages all aspects of bringing cases before the highest appellate court in the Commonwealth. The office is responsible for the Supreme Judicial Court's appellate caseload, attending sessions of the full court, maintaining the docket, processing all pertinent filings, and serving as the court's liaison to the parties or their counsel, among other duties.
Ms. Lewis worked as a Deputy Reporter of Decisions of the Supreme Judicial Court from 1996 to 2001, and was Assistant Reporter from 1987 until 1996. Prior to that, she worked as a lawyer in the firm of Berman & Moren for three years with a practice in civil and criminal law. She was a solo practitioner from 1982 to 1984. Ms. Lewis began her legal career as a trial attorney with the Massachusetts Defenders Committee in Middlesex and Essex counties. She is a graduate of Boston University Law School and Boston University. She resides in Cambridge.
