Ocean Management in Massachusetts
- The Massachusetts Ocean Management Initiative - This website provides information on the initiative launched in 2003 to examine evolving ocean uses and develop a comprehensive approach to managing ocean resources.
- Oceans Act of 2008 - Signed into law on May 28, 2008, this new legislation will lead to a first-in-the-nation ocean management plan to guide all development activity in state ocean waters.
- The Massachusetts Ocean Management Task Force Reports and Recommendations - The Task Force, which was appointed by Secretary of Environmental Affairs Ellen Roy Herzfelder to spearhead Governor Romney's Ocean Management Initiative, released its final reports and recommendations in March, 2004, which are available on this web page.
- Massachusetts Ocean Education Guide - This 2005 directory of Massachusetts ocean education resources includes programs designed to assist K-12 educators in teaching about the Commonwealth's ocean resources.
- CZM/USGS Geologic Mapping Initiative - CZM and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) are producing high-resolution seafloor geologic maps of Boston Harbor, the South Essex Ocean Sanctuary, and the South Merrimack embayment. The CZM/USGS mapping initiative is being coordinated with the regional and international Gulf of Maine Mapping Initiative and benthic mapping of Massachusetts waters. - Strategic Plan for Mapping Massachusetts Benthic Marine Habitats (PDF, 1.41 MB). This strategic plan, devloped by a NOAA Coastal Services Center fellow, describes a process to obtain maps of seafloor habitats throughout Massachusetts.
- Habitat Classification Feasibility Study for Coastal and Marine Environments in Massachusetts (PDF, 1 MB). CZM initiated this study to better understand published approaches to classify coastal and ocean habitats to facilitate mapping the state-wide distribution of habitats.

Ocean Management at the National Level
- Joint Ocean Commission Initiative - This effort, led by Admiral James Watkins and Leon Panetta, respective chairs of the U.S. Commission on Ocean Policy and Pew Oceans Commission, is an collaborative effort to accelerate change that results in meaningful ocean policy reform.
- U.S. Ocean Park Stewardship 2006-2008 Action Plan - The U.S. National Park Service has developed a strategy to increase the emphasis on ocean resource management and conservation. This plan identifies critical issues and ways to address these issues cooperatively with federal, state, tribal, and private partners. (PDF, 282 KB)
- U.S. Ocean Action Plan - The plan, issued in 2004, is the Bush Administration's response to the recommendations of the U.S. Commission on Ocean Policy (PDF, 236 KB).
- Council on Environmental Quality’s Committee on Ocean Policy - On December 17, 2004, President Bush established by Executive Order a Cabinet-level “Committee on Ocean Policy” to coordinate the activities of executive branch departments and agencies regarding ocean-related matters.
- An Ocean Blueprint for the 21st Century--the final report of the U.S. Commission on Ocean Policy - The report, released by the U.S. Commission on Ocean Policy in 2004, describes the Commission's final recommendations.
