COASTSWEEPThe Massachusetts Annual Statewide Beach CleanupVolunteers throughout Massachusetts turn out in large numbers each year for COASTSWEEP, the state-wide beach cleanup sponsored by CZM and the Urban Harbors Institute of UMass Boston. COASTSWEEP will celebrate its 25th Anniversary this September and October. COASTSWEEP is also part of an international campaign organized by Ocean Conservancy in Washington, DC. Participants all over the world collect marine debris and record the types of trash they collect. This information is then used to help reduce future marine debris problems. For the 25th anniversary, the goal is to clean up every coastal beach in Massachusetts. Interested in organizing a cleanup? It's easy! All the cleanup supplies (bags, gloves, data cards, pencils, etc.) are provided free of charge, and cleanups can be scheduled at your convenience throughout September and October. Each year, cleanups are scheduled throughout September and October. To get involved with the 2012 event see the COASTSWEEP website. Also, become a friend of COASTSWEEP by "liking" us on Facebook or follow COASTSWEEP and marine debris issues on Twitter. To find out more about COASTSWEEP and how easy it is to get involved, listen to the COASTSWEEP Podcast, Interview with CZM's Robin Lacey, on the WUMB Commonwealth Journal (9/16/12). Also, here is a highlight video of the 2010 COASTSWEEP kickoff at Lynn Shore & Nahant Beach Reservation. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
