Identifying Aquatic Invasive Species

To help detect and monitor AIS, CZM funded the development of 20 species identification cards for marine invaders in the Gulf of Maine - which were created by Salem Sound Coastwatch. Of the 20 cards, 13 are already established in the region, and seven are considered potential invaders.

Click on the individual species ID card you would like to view:

ID Cards for Established AIS (16 ID cards)

Ascidiella aspersa

ID Cards for Potential Invaders (7 ID cards)

Eriocheir sinensis

Hemigrapsus takanoi

Synidotea laevidorsalis

Corella eumyota

Rapana venosa

Sargassum muticum

Undaria pinnatifida

You can also Download all 23 ID cards (ZIP, 6 MB) file)

Some important resources for freshwater identification can be found on our links/resources page as well as more outside resources on identification, species profiles, and more.

In addition, Appendix E of the AIS Management Plan contains a list of the non-indigenous aquatic species documented in New England as of 2002.

Other AIS monitoring resources include:

  • Reporting - When there is something strange ... who needs to know?
  • Monitoring Partners (MIMIC) - Learn about the network of community groups and citizens watching our coast!
