Recreational Boating

Like commercial shipping, recreational boating is also a vector for Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) because of hull fouling as well as plants that “hitchhike” when entangled on motors or other parts of a boat. AIS may also get transported through bilge pumps and bait buckets. Our partners at the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) and the Department of Fish and Game (DFG) educate boaters about AIS and post signs at many boat ramps across the Commonwealth reminding boaters to keep your boat clean.

What you can do:

  • Remove plant debris from your boat when you take it out of the water, and dispose of the plant debris in the trash.
  • Inspect your hull and remove any attached organisms.
  • Never release unused bait into the water.

Prevention and education efforts for recreational boating include:

  • Massachusetts Clean Marina Guide - A reference produced by CZM for owners and operators of marine boating facilities that provides information on practices that reduce marina and boating impacts on the coastal environment.

If you have specific questions about recreational boating and AIS, please contact us.
