Harbor Connections
Through guided expeditions, middle school students discover various aspects of the natural and cultural history of the Boston Harbor Islands. Students study tide pools, forts, drumlins, and lighthouses, and gain an understanding of the animals and plants found at low tide in tide pools and shores on Bumpkin, Peddocks, Lovells, and Georges Islands. Students also learn about the political process that led to the Harbor Clean-Up, construction of the Deer Island sewage treatment plant, and creation of the national park, as well as what they can do to be responsible citizens to protect this open space.
