Northeastern Massachusetts Aquaculture Center and
Cat Cove Marine Laboratory at Salem State College
The Cat Cove Marine Laboratory is operated by Salem State College and is home to the Northeastern Massachusetts Aquaculture Center. Programs offered at the Cat Cove Marine Laboratory include education, research, and outreach. Education initiatives involve classroom instruction to K-16 students, teachers, and lay audiences. Traditional classroom instruction is supplemented by tours, presentations, and on-site visits. Research activities address aquatic issues from propagation of shellfish and finfish to environmental integrity. An energetic outreach program exists where technical assistance is provided to conservation and ecological projects, municipal and private projects, students and teachers, displaced fishers, and youth groups.
A 5,500-square-foot laboratory and 8-acre tidal pool, as well as a garage and two sheds constitute the core of facilities housed on a 16-acre site. The laboratory is fully equipped with 40 environmentally controlled tanks, analytical lab, and classroom. Equipment essential for field, laboratory, and construction activities is located in the laboratory, garage, and/or sheds.
